About Speedtest Global Index™
The Speedtest Global Index compares internet speed data from around the world on a monthly basis. Data for the Index comes from the hundreds of millions of tests taken by real people using Speedtest every month.
Internet measurements made with Speedtest occur at the times and in the places that are most relevant to the person taking the test. Each time a test is initiated, a snapshot of what the internet looks like in that place and time is recorded. When aggregated together, these individual experiences represent the typical internet performance for a given location.
Speedtest leverages a vast testing infrastructure with over 10,000 servers in more than 190 countries, ensuring users will always be able to test to a local server regardless of where they are located. By having multiple servers in every country and major city, Speedtest ensures an accurate view of performance without requiring long, or even international transit, to perform a test. As a result of this testing infrastructure and the enormous number of tests taken using Speedtest, Ookla has no need to extrapolate data to fill in gaps because its applications collect information from every imaginable location and every type of device at all hours of the day.
Country inclusion is now determined using the Precision Validity Score. Starting in June 2024, values reported each month use data from a rolling quarter which includes the current month in addition to the previous two months.Under this methodology, the limits from the 95% confidence interval must be within ±5% of the median download speed. From January 1, 2019 to May 2024 , countries must have had at least 300 unique user test results for mobile or fixed broadband in the reported month to be included in the Index. Prior to January 1, 2019 we required countries to have at least 3,333 unique user test results for fixed broadband and at least 670 unique user test results for mobile in the reported month. Results for mobile are based on all cellular technologies. Fixed broadband includes mobile WiFi results. Results are updated mid-month for the previous month.
